Making Vending Machine Operations Seamless

🎯 Context

Vending machines are everywhere - schools, offices, malls, hospitals. They're supposed to be convenient, but behind every machine are hardworking operators and technicians who keep them running. The problem? They're working completely blind. Currently, operators (restocking people) and technicians (repair people) have no real-time visibility into what's happening inside their machines. They rely on manual checks, phone calls, and guesswork to do their jobs efficiently.

😤 The Problem

Imagine driving across town to restock a vending machine, only to find it's already full. This is daily reality for vending machine operators. Operators waste 2-3 hours visiting machines blindly, bringing wrong inventory, making multiple warehouse trips. Technicians get vague "machine broken" calls, arrive with entire toolkits for simple 5-minute fixes. Result? Empty machines lose sales, broken machines frustrate customers, and skilled workers spend time driving instead of working.

💡 The Solution

Munchkin transforms vending machines from "dumb" boxes into smart, communicating systems. The tablet-based app gives operators and technicians real-time insights into every machine's status, eliminating guesswork and wasted trips.

👷🏻‍♂️ Operator

For operators, Munchkin provides exact shopping lists. Instead of guessing what each machine needs, Operator now able to view "Machine A7 needs: 5 Cokes, 3 Snickers, 8 Chips." They load their truck precisely what's required and visits only machines that actually need restocking.

👨🏻‍🔧 Technicians

For technicians, the app displays specific problem details automatically detected by the machines. Technicians no longer gets mystery calls - They see "Coin jam in slot 3, bring coin mechanism tool" and arrives prepared with exactly what he needs.

🎯 Impact of the Design

By using Munchkin, vending operators and technicians can:

● 2-3 hours saved daily per worker (previously spent on unnecessary trips)

● Reduced fuel costs from fewer wasted trips

● Increased revenue from machines staying operational longer

📊 Metrics

🧑🏻‍🏫 What I Learned

● Design for users who work in the field (not sitting at desks).

● Prioritize clarity over complexity — operators and technicians need quick, easy-to-read interfaces.

● Adapt my design process to real-world challenges like internet issues or limited time.

🔮 Future Considerations

● Test Munchkin with real users in a vending company and refine the design based on their feedback.

● Explore adding a web dashboard for managers to monitor machine health and operator performance.

● Add predictive maintenance alerts based on usage patterns.

🏁 Final Thoughts

Designing for field workers is about clarity, not complexity.

● Prioritize tasks in a limited time.

● Design around real-world constraints like internet loss.

● Focus on what users truly need — and cut the rest
